What are Categories vs. Programs vs. Activities?

In the MyRec.com system, Programs consist of 3 main elements. A program, an activity, and a category.

The first step in having an activity for your community to register for is to create a Program. A program can be thought of as a container, that holds the activities which are what your customer actually registers for. Activities contain specific information such as dates, times, age parameters and pricing. An example of a program is Karate. An example of activities that would be within that program container are Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Karate.

The Myrec.com system has 3 activity types. It is important to know what activity type you will need when creating a new program as once an activity type is selected, it cannot be changed.

    • Standard Activities are the the default selection and most commonly used. This activity type is best used if your activity has one fixed price and a fixed schedule as registration options. Standard activities also offer a waitlist option.
    • The second activity type is Advanced Activities. Advanced Activities allow the public to register for select days, weeks, months, or an entire session of an activity as well as select different pricing options to correspond with their date selections. This activity type is commonly used for Summer Camps or After School Programs and can result in a different participant roster for each day. It is important to note that Advanced Activities do not have an automatic waitlist feature the way Standard Activities does.
    • The last activity type is Team Sports. This activity type is similar to a Standard Activity in that the pricing and date selection are fixed options. Team Sports also offers a waitlist option. It is best used when a Team Schedule is necessary.
      • Additional features of a team sport are the ability to use a Round Robin Scheduler to automatically create a game or tournament schedule and Team Sports also allows you to create the activity by entering a Date Range if the exact dates are net yet known but you’d like to begin accepting registrations.

The last piece of the 3 elements of a program is the Category. Categories are organizational tools that allow both the public and management side user to more easily filter down their search results and find the activity they are interested in. Categories are fully customizable and each activity can be associated with up to 2 categories.
